At Roots Learning Center, we believe there’s more to education than memorizing facts and passing tests. Our nature-based, holistic learning community in Port Orchard, WA, is built around creativity, critical thinking, and connection, which we believe to be the essential roots of a meaningful education.

We serve students ages 8–11 through a thoughtfully integrated program that blends core academics with enrichment and life skills, all in a small-group setting where children learn in the way that suits them best.

Mornings are focused on core academics—reading, writing, math, science—taught through hands-on experiences and collaborative projects, often outdoors. Afternoons are dedicated to enrichment and student-led exploration, including arts, maker projects, social-emotional learning, and practical life skills. Students choose their own inquiry-based projects, guided by experienced educators who support growth rather than control it.

At Roots, we go beyond state standards to teach the why behind learning. Our students don’t just follow directions, they ask bold questions, take initiative, and develop the tools to make change. With close ties to the local community, our learners engage in meaningful field experiences, farm days, and civic projects that empower them to be active citizens not just future workers.

We’re here for the kids who are daydreaming in class, the ones who feel boxed in by worksheets, and the families who know that education should empower, not oppress. Our school isn’t a factory, it’s a living, breathing learning community where children rediscover their purpose, their curiosity, and their joy.
