Academics at Roots Learning Center

At Roots Learning Center, we believe there's more to education than memorizing facts and passing tests. Our nature-based, holistic learning community in Port Orchard, WA serves students in kindergarten through 5th grade through a thoughtfully integrated program that blends core academics with enrichment and life skills; all in a small-group setting where children learn in the way that suits them best. A nature-based, child-centered environment aren't a trade-off to rigorous academics; they're one and the same. Our reading, writing, and math programs are built on proven, research-based methods and delivered in small, multi-age groups where children are met exactly where they are and move forward as they're ready.

We're inspired by the best of Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, and Forest School. Rather than following any single philosophy, we've combined evidence-based practices into a learning model that emphasizes curiosity, strong academics, meaningful relationships, creativity, nature, and individualized learning. The result is a place where children rediscover their purpose, their curiosity, and their joy. Roots is where academics are genuinely rigorous because they're rooted in real understanding, not worksheets.

Because our program is mastery-based, progress is described as Emerging → Developing → Secure rather than letter grades. This helps families know precisely what a child can do now and what comes next. Growth is made visible through portfolios, student self-tracking, and family conferences, not high-stakes testing.

Children keep a portfolio of their best work and help track their own progress, which builds real ownership and pride. We meet with families throughout the year to walk through that growth together. Our approach aligns with grade-level expectations, so a child's skills always translate;  but day to day, our focus is real mastery and joy in learning, not test scores.  We find each child's true starting point, teach the next skill they're ready for, and help them master it before moving on.

Our students don't just follow directions. They ask bold questions, take initiative, and develop the tools to make change. With close ties to the local community, our learners engage in meaningful field experiences, farm days, and civic projects that empower them to be active citizens; not just future workers.

How We Teach

A few principles run through everything we do:

  • Mornings are for core academics: reading, writing, math, social studies and science are integrated but reading and math and taught explicitly.
  • Afternoons are for enrichment and student-led exploration: arts, maker projects, social-emotional learning, and practical life skills. Students choose their own inquiry-based projects, guided by experienced educators who support growth rather than control it.
  • Placement by skill, not age. In our multi-age setting, a child works at their own level in every subject. This lets us challenge advanced learners and give developing learners the time and support they need without anyone feeling ahead or behind. There is also space for students to be self-directed learners, have passion projects, and build confidence in their learning abilities. We are not boxed in by one method or one curriculum and value following the learner and what interests them while maintaining academic challenge and growth.
  • Understanding before speed. Whether decoding a word or reasoning through a math problem, we build genuine understanding first. Fluency and confidence follow.
  • Learning is connected. Reading, writing, science, and social studies are taught together as one inquiry through five themed units that carry the whole year. Children build real knowledge of the natural world and their community and knowledge is the foundation of comprehension and curiosity.
  • Hands-on and outdoors. Real measurement, investigation, practical life, and time in nature are core to how children learn here, not extras.

English Language Arts

  • Structured, phonics-first reading. Our reading instruction is built on the Orton-Gillingham approach. This is an explicit, systematic, multisensory method for teaching the "code" of English. Children learn the sounds, patterns, and structure of words in a carefully sequenced way that is effective for all readers and especially supportive for children with dyslexia or who simply need a clear, logical path into reading. Reading and spelling are taught together.
  • Comprehension from day one. While children build decoding skills, we grow comprehension through rich read-alouds of wonderful books, discussion, and knowledge-building across science and social studies. As a child's decoding becomes secure, comprehension, analysis, and a love of reading take center stage.
  • Writing, taught explicitly. For writing, we use the Writing Revolution (the Hochman Method)  a sentence-first approach in which children first learn to build strong, clear sentences, then organized paragraphs, and finally full compositions. Writing is embedded in the content children are already studying, so it always has real purpose. Over the year, students practice narrative, informational, and opinion writing.
  • Room to soar. For students who are ready to work beyond grade level, our program continues into secondary-level literacy skills. This includes close reading, analysis, argument, and research so advanced learners are never held back.

Mathematics: From Concrete to Abstract

  • Concept first, with real materials. Our math program follows a concrete → pictorial → abstract progression. Children first build ideas with hands-on materials and real quantities, then represent them with drawings and models, and only then work with numbers, symbols, and equations. This is how deep, lasting mathematical understanding is built and it's why our students can explain their thinking, not just get an answer.
  • Math that means something. Math at Roots lives in the real world: measuring, building, cooking, gardening, handling money, and investigating outdoors. Number sense grows through experience, woven together with science so children use math to make sense of the world around them.
  • A clear path toward higher math. Our developmental sequence carries children from counting and number sense through fractions, measurement, data, and early algebra. We are building real readiness for higher math, at each child's own pace.  As in reading, advanced students can continue into secondary-level mathematics at their own pace.
